Home Counties Autumn
21st October 2008 to 29th October 2008

On Tuesday a mid-morning meeting gave me the opportunity of a quick stake out at Caledonian Road and Camden Road (where I bumped into fellow FMi member 47484).

Wednesday was a brilliant day so I took my lunch break on the footbridge between Horley and Gatwick Airport, in the vain hope that 7O55 might run on Wednesday (needless to say it didn't).

On Saturday morning I drove out to Dudswell in Hertfordshire and copped three trains in less than half an hour. It would have been four but I was walking back to the car when an unfeasibly early 4L90 passed. The one that got away.....

Monday morning brought one final opportunity for an early morning shot of Hull Trains 07:20 departure from King's Cross, thanks to the clocks going back on Saturday, plus some Freightliners at Highbury and the 3S84 Gospel Oak to Liverpool Street RHTT.

On Tuesday I managed to catch the diverted 7Y36 coming off the Quarry Line at Earlswood on account of the week long blockade in Merstham Tunnel. Thanks go to 59001 and others from the Freightmaster Interactive community for giving me a heads up on what was running and when. Thanks guys.

On Tuesday evening London enjoyed question  its first October snowfall since the 1930s. Unfortunately by Wednesday most of it had gone, but I was determined to get some pictures in the morning sun with whatever residue of the previous nights falls I could find. Train-wise it was quite productive as the weather had thrown a spanner in the works overnight and many trains were running hours late.

It was followed by what turned out to be the 4R98 Tilbury to Felixstowe which must be reversing at Wembley rather than Stratford, I guess because of engineering activity in the Stratford area.

One of the most characterful trains to pass through London, the Coatbridge to Felixstowe, double headed by a pair of Freightliner's vintage 86s, in this case 86628 and 86604.

Despite appearances this is actually a South Eastern train, from Tunbridge Wells to Horsham. Southern's 377s are still, in my opinion, the best of the modern MUs which dominate our railways. Its a shame Bombardier couldn't produce a tilting version to replace the less than adequate Pendolinos.

Suffering by comparison with the 377s are First Capital Connect's 319s, although their recent refresh has made their interior slightly less utilitarian. A pair on a Brighton train negotiating a short 20 mph TSR.
